Bristol Pound Origins

In 2007, the Transition Town Movement (TTM) was founded in Totnes, Devon, with the aim of finding different ways to make towns and cities greener, and more ethical. They had lots of ideas including using a local currency as a tool to improve localisation and reduce transport emissions.

Following the 2008 financial crash, a group of people from Bristol’s TTM movement looked into the idea of a local currency for Bristol. The aims were broader. Not only did they see this as a way to localise supply chains, they understood the importance of local businesses in bringing more and better opportunities for the people of Bristol; as local businesses owners reinvested in the city, more wealth would stay in the local economy.

The group also recognised that the resilience of the local economy would be greater if it were based on a more diverse network of small businesses.

Bristol Pound 2010-2020

Bristol Pound CIC was founded in 2010 as a non-profit organisation, seeking to tilt the economy towards social justice and environmental responsibility.

In 2012 Bristol Pound CIC launched Bristol Pound; a sterling-backed local currency scheme to encourage localisation in the economy and promote independent businesses.

A partnership was created with the Bristol Credit Union, and key city stakeholders included Bristol City Council and Bristol Energy.

Bristol Pound quickly became the largest local currency scheme in the UK, and one of the largest in Europe.

Bristol Pound Learnings

In 2019, Bristol Pound membership reached 1,600 personal members and 520 business members, and £1M Bristol Pounds circulated in Bristol.

While these figures are very good for a local currency and Bristol Pound has enjoyed world-wide fame, the scheme didn’t have anywhere near the scale and impact that had been hoped for.

This, plus the move to a more cashless society, has led to the development of a new scalable and digital solution: Bristol Pay.
