Bristol Pay and the

One City Plan

In January 2019, the Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees launched the first iteration of Bristol’s One City Plan. The plan describes where we want Bristol to be by 2050, the city’s key challenges, and how city partners will work together to create a fair, healthy, and sustainable city.

The One City Approach brings together a huge range of public, private, voluntary and third sector partners within Bristol who share this vision for the city. Bristol Pay shares the One City Plan’s vision, and is keen to see the plan’s goals realised.

Drawing from feedback, input and consultations throughout the year, the City Office have produced the second iteration of the One City Plan.

The One City Plan (OCP) is grouped into six main themes, with targets aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Bristol Pay can help achieve the plan’s targets in two main ways:

The 6 OCP Themes

Bristol Pay will bring people and businesses together, highlighting in particular our local independent businesses. We’re also working with First Bus to enable people to pay for buses with Bristol Pay. And we’re looking at how tokens can be developed to encourage people to make their travel as low carbon as possible.

Bristol Pay will ensure people who are excluded by the banks have access to digital money in their own names. We’ll be promoting local independent businesses and small traders.  And we’ll be minimising the leakage of money from the city in transaction charges.

Climate change demands behaviour change, and Bristol Pay’s token schemes are all about that. We will be developing ways to recognise and thank people for the changes they make in their lives, and encouraging a long term and cumulative approach to culture change.

Quality of life is integral to a strong and sustainable city. We need purpose and connection to our community to maintain our spirits, and encouragement to keep fit and eat healthily. Bristol Pay will create community token schemes to help develop sharing, caring communities in which everyone can thrive.

Bristol Pay wants to see vibrant high streets, strong communities and homes for everyone. We’re looking at ways tokens can encourage a stronger sense of locality, but also at how they might help people on the journey from rough sleeping to having a home.

Bristol Pay is looking at lifelong learning and broader civic education. We strongly believe that education and training are the foundation for personal empowerment and mutual respect, the hallmarks of a strong society.
